yaco

YACO AND ETERNITY – A FABLE IN THE AFTERLIFE
Dedicated to all the stray dogs in the world, especially to Cholito, whose murder in Chile led to the enactment of the «Cholito Law».

Difficult questions
What happens after death?
Does anything of us survive, be it the Self, soul, consciousness, spirit or whatever we choose to call it? And in that case, what will we find «beyond» this existence?
Historically, this topic has been relegated to the interesting but controlled domain of religions. On the other hand, modern fiction has notably been timid in exploring this theme.  Modern narrative arts predominantly treat death as a mystery to be solved by the living. As a result, the market for stories is flooded with countless enigmatic deaths and intricate murder investigations.
And little, very little, is said about what could happen in an imagined Afterlife or Great Beyond (yes, now capitalized to make it sound like a galaxy or a dimension to be explored).

From Cholito in Patronato to Yaco in the Great Beyond
The fable Yaco and Eternity, created by Rubén Palma and approximately 80 pages long, ventures into the Afterlife through an atypical protagonist: Yaco, a stray dog.

The story is based on Cholito, a stray dog from the Patronato neighborhood in Santiago de Chile, who became sadly famous in January 2017. Hired by a local merchant, two thugs brutally attacked Cholito, leading to his death the next day. Outrage over this act of cruelty sparked widespread protests, ultimately resulting in the “Cholito Law” – to prevent and punish animal abuse in Chile.

Experimental Narrative
The point of view that takes us through Yaco’s epic is auto-diegetic: the plot unfolds solely from the protagonist’s experience.
First-person narrative has notable precedents —starting with A Clockwork Orange by A. Burgess— but it is not among the most common.

The abrupt jumps to another chapter, even when the story continues uninterrupted, are not something one encounters very often in literature either.

The most striking, and perhaps riskiest, experiment is the use of dialogue in a format similar to a theater or film script. This unconventional style may prove challenging for some readers.

Plot and Characters
Once one has boarded the author’s experimental train, perhaps a little hastily, it is easy to identify with Yaco and his adventures in the Afterlife. Dogs have strong feelings of friendship and loyalty, something that humans also experience – from time to time and not as much as recommended or desired.

Thanks to Broken Wing, the wise and enigmatic seagull, Yaco suddenly realizes that he has left behind his life with Ema; the crazy woman from the market who had accepted him as her dog and companion. He now finds himself in the Midworld, which is what animals call the Afterlife  – a dreamlike space where illusions feel as real as life itself.

Yaco’s grief is overwhelming, yet despite losing Ema forever, he cannot escape his leitmotif: to be a good dog, faithful and loyal to a human.

Yaco then sets out in search of a new owner through the dreamlike twists and turns of the Midworld. Along the way, he encounters animals and humans who, like him, yearn for a loved one or a profound sense of fulfillment. He also meets friendly, helpful beings, as well as monstrous, dangerous creatures.

Unexpected twists force him to reevaluate his attitude and change course. Characters and circumstances prompt him to reflect on the Self, God, and immortality. As he journeys inward, Broken Wing appears sporadically with helpful advice, which Yaco often dismisses.

In conclusion
Yaco and Eternity offers a seriously entertaining and optimistic vision of what there might be «on the other side.»

The protagonist’s reunion with his past in the shadowy depths of the Midworld contrasts with the peace and brightness of reconciliation with himself, offering an allegory of the ego’s surrender to a mystical, universal identity.

The fable genre is characterized by:

  1. Presenting animals with human thoughts and behaviors: Anthropomorphism.
  2. Offering teachings and morals – elements certainly present in this story.

Yaco and Eternity might seem, or even be, an attempt to “squeeze” too much out of the genre, yet it remains an original and thought-provoking recreation of it.

Some of the author’s sources of inspiration, listed at the end of the book, are quite evident: The Tibetan Book of the Dead, The Egyptian Book of the Dead, Emanuel Swedenborg, Hermann Hesse, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Richard Bach… and several more.
